I hope that everyone had an enjoyable Easter weekend with family and friends and had the chance to get a game of golf in.

SLOW PLAY

Unfortunately over the Easter weekend the golf course experienced a slow pace of play as well as the tee being well behind starting times. Slow play has a lot of contributing factors, but the good news is that there are ways that we as members can improve the pace of play.

Both the R and A and Golf Australia have published extensively researched pace of play reports and the number one impact on pace of play is the promotion of ready golf. All members are able to have a positive impact of pace of play and make a round of golf more enjoyable for all players. I ask all members to help the pace of play by following the below recommendations from the R and A:

Hitting a shot when safe to do so if a player farther away faces a challenging shot and is taking time to assess their options

Shorter hitters playing first from the tee or fairway if longer hitters have to wait

Hitting a tee shot if the person with the honour is delayed in being ready to play

Hitting a shot before helping someone to look for a lost ball

Putting out even if it means standing close to someone else’s line

Not marking short putts and putting out

Hitting a shot if a person who has just played from a greenside bunker is still farthest from the hole but is delayed due to raking the bunker

When a player’s ball has gone over the back of a green, any player closer to the hole but chipping from the front of the green should play while the other player is having to walk to their ball and assess their shot

Marking scores upon immediate arrival at the next tee, except that the first player to tee off marks their card immediately after teeing off

Not waiting and watching your playing partners putt out. If the next tee is free, move to the tee and prepare to tee off whilst your playing partners finish putting out.

Golf is a sport we play to enjoy and we do not want to turn our game into a race around the course. What I do ask is that all members take notice of their pace of play and always maintain their place in the field.

Pace of play has been a continual problem in the game of golf generally and for a long time at St Michaels. This issue will be further discussed at the next Match Committee meeting and further measures may be put in place.

MEMBERS INFORMATION NIGHT

There was an information night in the Club House last night to present to the membership the current St Michaels financial model. Thank you for all the members that did attend the presentation and I hope the information presented was helpful and informative. Moving forward, the information presented will help to inform our membership of our current position so we can make informed decisions for St Michaels future. There will be further follow ups to the presentation.

NEW FLAGS

The greens committee has approved the introduction of a coloured flag system. The new system will indicate the flag position by a different flag colour. The positions and colours are as follows:

Red and White check – front 3rd of the green

Green and White check – middle of the green

Yellow and White check – back 3rd of the green

The new flag system will come into play over the next couple of weeks so keep an eye out for them.

GOLF RESULTS

Congratulations to Buddy Nagi for winning the Senior Championships. Buddy over came Jack Scruse 3&2 in the final and from all accounts the game was one of very high quality and played with great spirit. It is a victory that Buddy can be very proud of as Jack has won seven of the last eight Senior Championships and is a very fierce competitor.

The Ladies Pennant Team’s fantastic season unfortunately came to an end in the semi finals against the Australian Golf Club. I want to personally thank every player and support staff for the way you have represented St Michaels Golf Club. Outstanding!!

The Mens Pennant Team were successful in winning their semi final against Concord to progress to yet another Final. The team have a chance to defend their title but unfortunately due to the wet and wild weather the final has been postponed to a later date. Once the new date for the final is set, we will be fully prepared to bring another flag home. GO ST MICKS!!

What a fantastic round by Daniel Shneier on Thursday. Daniel is a keen golfer that has been working hard on his game with John Serhan. Daniel plays off a handicap of 5 and on Thursday had 46 points That is 5 UNDER!!! Daniel had a total of 7 birdies for his round and shot 5 under on the back nine…. very impressive golf. Great to see all Daniel’s hard work come to fruition.

THE COURSE

The rainfall over the last month has been unprecedented and record breaking. The course has seen some flood damage and excess ground water in some areas. Lee and his ground staff have been working hard to minimise the damage from the rainfall as well as some drainage works on the 11th and the 12th to further improve the course’s ability to disperse excess ground water. There were many courses over the last month that have been closed at various stages due to the rainfall but the investment in the drainage system at St Michaels has seen minimal interruption to the courses playability.

I must again ask all members to take care whilst driving carts. The course is soft with all the rain we have had and so it is even more important to take care where and how members drive carts on the course. Member can limit further damage by:

Steering well clear of obvious wet or rain affected areas. DO NOT DRIVE THROUGH MUDDY AREAS.

Keep on constructed paths as much as practically possible

Keep carts at least 5m from all green and bunkers areas

Do not drive carts through sandy waste areas

Keep carts off tees at ALL times. Keep carts at least 5m from all teeing areas

Do not drive carts through GUR areas. These areas are trying to grow and repair

The renovation of the 2nd and 3rd green complexes is advancing well with the new temporary green on the second being seeded and growth starting to come through. The green has been seeded with the same seed as the 9th and 11th greens and will hopefully be of a similar quality. There has been renders of the green complexes posted on the website and notice board.

UPCOMING EVENTS

Sat 3rd – Monthly Medal

Fri 16th – Completion of Rd3 of Summer Singles

Sat 17th – Presentation Day (Shotgun Start)

Sat 24th – Blue Tee Composite Course

The Red Belly Challenge has finished for the year due to the shorter hours of daylight and the ability to get all players through.

Happy Golfing to All

Scott Morrison
Club Captain

Hello Members Unfortunately, the long days of summer have passed for another year and the joys of playing golf into the early evenings of daylight savings has come to an end.
